Ususally the first question by a family member or the senior adult themself?seeking private duty home care is Doesn?t Medicare Cover This? Medicare would likely already be broke if it covered hours of care a day or a week continuously. Learn What Medicare Home Health Care does and does not cover.
?
The answer is NO! Medicare Home Health Care by its very nature is intermittent care via home visits. Think Medical!? Medicare will pay at 100% home visits by a Registered Nurse, Physical, Occupational or Speech Therapist, Medical Social Worker and bath visits by a certified nurse assistant.
These are considered ?medical skills?. They require an order from?your physician?doctor, though it doesn?t require a hospital or rehab stay. If you or your aging loved one meet certain criteria i.e. being home bound, then you can receive these service which are completely paid for through your Medicare.
Private duty care is quite different. Although it may be intermittent, it is usually received at 2-4 hour increments up to 24 hour live in care. No doctor?s order is required. You choose the shifts you want ? number of days and hours per week. Be smart and go through a licensed Home Care company so that the caregivers are screened, certified and you have back up and recourse should the situation require it.
A private duty caregiver will assist, as needed with personal care ? the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) ? bathing, dressing, grooming, transferring, toileting and feeding. They will also help with laundry, driving to appointments, cooking, shopping companion and respite care.?
Private duty home care workers are consider to be non-medical people and the charge is either paid out of pocket or through a Long Term Care Insurance Policy.
It is recommended, by insurance agents at least, to begin purchasing LTC insurance in your late 40?s or in your fifties. Working for a Home Care company, we see that most clients do in fact have a policy to cover their home care. It is an expensive service over time so you may wish to start investigating your post retirement health care plan ? beyond Medicare ? which is essentialy Federal health insurance for seniors.
If you can?t afford a policy or feel you would like more control over hiring care, then you may want to start putting money aside for that purpose.
Long Term Care insurance is just one piece of your post retirement planning. You will do well to put on your 2013 To Do List ? consulting with a financial planner and/or Elder Law Attorney. None of know what Federal and State programs will be viable in the coming years, more of our post retirement expenses will be ours alone.? As is the theme of this BLOG? Start Planning Now.
