Florida Basketball: Gators' Takeaway from Stunning Loss at Missouri

So much for balanced scoring and solid defense. That formula, which had propelled the University of Florida basketball team to the top of the SEC, fell woefully short Tuesday night as the Missouri Tigers exposed the Gators as a team with virtually no inside presence and an inability to finish.

The result was a crushing 3-point loss for the Gators, who led for most of the game until Missouri took their first lead with 2:47 remaining. The Gators, who only days ago appeared to have a lock on the SEC title, are now clinging to a 1 1/2 game lead over Alabama, with five conference games remaining before the SEC tournament.

The Gators (21-4,11-2), enter the final stretch of the regular SEC season with a myriad of concerns, not the least of which is an inconsistent, inside post game. Against Missouri, Florida center Patric Young was virtually invisible offensively, scoring only two points in four field-goal attempts in his 26 minutes on the court.

Never was the lack of an inside game more apparent than in the Gators' next-to-last possession, trailing by one point with 18 seconds remaining.

The Gators never threatened to go low, before senior guard Kenny Boynton launched an errant 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining. Missouri's Junior Cadougan grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Florida forward Erik Murphy. Cadougan sank two free-throws, sealing the victory for Missouri, which remained undefeated at home (15-0) and improved to 8-5 in the SEC (19-7 overall).

It was an impressive turnaround for Missouri, which lost to Florida by 31 points (52-83) earlier this season in Gainesville.

The Gators' inability to finish was very reminiscent of its early season loss at Arizona, where the Gators blew an 11-point lead with 10 minutes remaining, before losing by one point, 65-64. The Gators actually led Arizona by 6 points with 56 seconds left in the game.

The Gators have blown similar leads in their back-to-back Elite 8 losses to Louisville and Butler during the last two NCAA tournaments.

In spite of a lineup that features balanced scoring, the Gators showed once again that?they lack a prolific scorer they can turn to with the game on the line.

Compounding the Gators' problems at Missouri was poor free-throw shooting. The Gators shot 50 percent from the free-throw line (6-12), including a stretch of five misses in a row during the second half.

Despite these obstacles, the Gators are still in the driver's seat for an SEC title and could secure a No. 2 seed at the NCAA tournament barring any additional setbacks.

But to do so, Gator coach Billy Donovan will have to find a way overcome a number of Achilles' heels, or the Gators could be headed for a disappointing finish. The possible return of injured forward Will Yeguete for the post-season could help, although forward Casey Prather has filled in admirably.

Florida's road to the Final Four has now detoured into the road to recovery. That journey begins Saturday night in Gainesville, when the Gators look to avenge their most lopsided loss of the season in a rematch with Arkansas. The Razorbacks defeated the Gators 80-69 on February 5 in Fayetteville.

Impacts: Cueto was hoping to represent in his native Dominican Republic in the event, but the Reds intervened. The right-hander will remain in major league camp all spring.

Rather than rest on the accomplishments of his finest professional season, Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto said he is looking to improve this year. Completely over the oblique injury that plagued him at the end of last season, Cueto will have a tough act to follow. He went 19-9 with a 2.78 ERA and pitched two complete games in 33 starts while fanning a team-high 170 batters. He became the first Reds pitcher to claim at least 19 wins with an ERA under 3.00 since 1988. "I feel great," he told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "My arm is good. But I can get better. I'm trying my hardest."

Analysis: One of the more overlooked parts of Cueto's standout season was his improved poise on the mound. The right-hander did not become flustered when he fell into jams and also walked just 49 batters in 217 innings -- the first time in his career he topped 200 innings. "He always had good command," manager Dusty Baker said. "He always had good stuff. He's worked on his composure. He doesn't get rattled now as easily. ... Johnny's improved. He worked hard to get to this point." Cueto, who turned 27 last week, could experience a slight regression this year but is still a strong source for wins and ERA. Don't let him slip too far in the middle rounds of Fantasy drafts for the upcoming season.

Doodle in the air with a 3-D printing pen

A new pen that allows doodlers to doodle in the air aims to open the door of 3-D printing to anyone old enough to handle a pen with a scorching hot tip. No software or computers required. Even messy scribbles take on new dimensions.

The 3Doodler was launched today on the crowd-funding site Kickstarter by toy company WobbleWorks. As of this writing, $75 buys a pen and two bags of plastic ?ink.? For the sake of comparison, the MakerBot Replicator 2, a popular model among 3-D-printing hobbyists, retails for $2,199.

The new pen looks like a blackened cucumber and has the heft of an apple. It extrudes heated plastic that cools quickly and solidifies in the air. So, for example, draw a box on a piece of paper and then lift then pen upwards from the corners to make a 3-D cube.

Users can also doodle on paper then lift their designs off the page and keep adding to it. For those who need a guide, the company is releasing print-out stencil kits that allow users to trace designs such as an Eiffel Tower and then join the pieces together with the pen.

One word of caution: The pen?s tip can get as hot as 518 degrees Fahrenheit. The plastic is safe to touch once it leaves the pen, but WobbleWorks recommends the pen be kept out of reach of children under the age of 12.

German survey shores up markets; Dow eyes record

LONDON (AP) ? Further evidence that the German economy, Europe's largest, is picking up steam helped shore up markets on Tuesday as the Dow Jones index made another foray towards its all-time closing high.

The German investor sentiment index from the ZEW institute rose to 48.2 points in February from 31.5 the previous month, way ahead of market expectations of a more modest rise to around 35. The index is now at its highest level for nearly three years and adds to the evidence suggesting Germany's economy will not fall into recession ? defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth. Figures last week showed it shrank 0.6 percent in the final quarter of 2012 from the previous three-month period.

Europe's economic fortunes rest heavily on its largest economy. A growing Germany has the potential to help those economies suffering from government debt-reduction plans and to limit the length of time the 17-country group of countries that use the euro remains in recession. Figures last week showed output across the eurozone shrank by a quarterly rate of 0.6 percent in the final three months of 2012.

"Risk appetite has been whetted ..... with the tone set by a much stronger than expected reading on Germany investor sentiment," said Jennifer Lee, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets.

In Europe, Germany's DAX ended the day up 1.6 percent at 7,752 while the CAC-40 in France rose 1.8 percent to 3,735. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 0.96 percent higher at 6,379.

The euro also clambered off day lows to trade 0.3 percent higher against the dollar, at $1.3386.

In the U.S., traders returned to their desk following a three-day holiday weekend in an optimistic frame of mind, with the Dow Jones industrial average 0.4 percent higher at 14,023, around 135 points shy of its record close set in October 2007. The broader S&P 500 index rose 0.5 percent to 1,527.

Google was the standout U.S. stock, trading above $800 a share for the first time ever.

Earlier in Asia, markets were weighed by concerns over new real estate curbs in China.

"Asian equities in general and the entire commodities sector are depending on stronger Chinese growth this year, much of which is expected to come from private construction," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor.

Chinese shares fared worst, with the Shanghai Composite Index down 1.6 percent at 2,382.91 and the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index closing 1.9 percent lower at 951.71. Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi rose 0.1 percent to 1,985.83 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 1 percent to 23,143.91.

Japanese investors booked some profits following Monday's strong gains as many investors awaited news on who will be the next head of the country's central bank. The Nikkei 225 index fell 0.3 percent to 11,372.34.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, elected on promises of bold action to ignite the moribund Japanese economy, is likely to appoint someone with views in line with the program he is championing. One element of the program includes a target of 2 percent inflation to reverse two decades of falling prices, which hurt growth. He has also indicated a preference for a weaker yen and over recent weeks that's exactly what he's got despite Tuesday's modest appreciation.

The dollar was down 0.28 percent at 93.50 yen. Japanese stocks have soared in recent weeks as the yen has fallen in anticipation of steps that would push the currency lower. A lower yen makes Japanese exports potentially more competitive in international markets.

Oil prices turned failed to track equities higher, with the benchmark New York rate down 18 cents at $96.23 a barrel.
