Facebook to show off 'new look for News Feed' on March 7

Members of the press have been invited to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. to "come see a new look for News Feed" on March 7. Yes, folks ? it sounds like it's time for another redesign.

The March 7 event will kick off at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT and is on the heels of the social network's Graph Search announcement from about a month-and-a-half ago.

Leading up to this invite, there have been plenty of rumors of a Facebook redesign? albeit the focus has been on mobile and onthe Timeline. In early January, TechCrunch's Josh Constine reported that he'd seen an "employee-only iOS app build of an evolved form of Facebook's mobile news feed, which ditches the empty blue and white chrome for full-screen photo tiles and overlaid text."

Constantine described the layout as being so "fresh" that it could "make Facebook's feed exciting again."

More recently, the Next Web's Nick Summers caught sight of a single-column Timeline layout, which Facebook appears to be testing with users in New Zealand. But since Facebook's known for testing changes on a small percentage of its users before rolling them out to everyone, we wouldn't bet on the New Zealand experiment accompanying News Feed changes revealed on March 7.

Apple's Lightning to HDMI adapter opened up, discovered to contain a tiny AirPlay computer

Apple's Lightning to HDMI adapter opened up, discovered to contain a tiny AirPlay computer

The fine folks at Panic were experimenting with video out from iOS -- never we mind why -- and came across an interesting discovery: Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter, aka HDMI adapter, doesn't seem to pass along a 1080p signal in the traditional manner. Instead, it looks like it's passing along upscaled AirPlay-like video. Intrigued as to how, Cabel Sasser gutted the adapter like a Tauntaun on a cold night to find out, and shared what he discovered on the Panic Blog:

Your eyes don?t deceive you ? that tiny chip says ARM. And the H9TKNNN2GD part number on there points towards RAM ? 2Gb worth.

So it's a tiny computer. More specifically, a tiny, single purpose, hard-lined Apple TV-esque device. That explains the less-than-stellar quality of the output, but not why Apple chose to go this way. For some theories on that, and more on Panic's adapter adventure, including the torn-open guts of the gear, check out the link below.

Mom-to-be lets online voters pick baby?s name for $5,000

A California woman expecting a baby in September has agreed to allow online voters name her child in exchange for $5,000.

Natasha Hill, a 26-year-old art teacher from Los Angeles, won a contest launched by Belly Ballot, an Austin, Texas-based startup that allows expecting parents to crowdsource their baby names with friends and family.

Hill was one of 80 women to enter the site's Belly Branding contest. According to Belly Ballot, voters will be presented with a list of 10 names?five boy names and five girl names?selected by the company and advertisers sponsoring the contest. According to Belly Ballot founder Lacey Moler, product names or names that are ?too crazy" will not be allowed.

Hill said she plans to use the cash to pay down credit card debt and start a college fund for her unborn child.

?I?m so excited to have won!? she wrote in a post on the Belly Ballot blog. ?The whole Belly Ballot concept is so social and fun, and can?t wait to see what everyone votes for!?

Online voting takes place March 18-22, and the girl and boy names with the most votes when the ballot concludes will be one that Hill's baby will legally have?at least until he or she turns 18.

The contest has stirred debate among traditionalists who believe deciding on a baby name should be a personal decision among parents.

?This is crazy," one commenter on the Belly Ballot blog wrote. "You should all be ashamed of yourselves for even considering this. What are you going to tell your baby when they ask you how you chose their name? Don't do it, you will regret this.?

?Don?t get me wrong, I could use the money," wrote another. "But this sounds a bit outrageous."

Moler disagrees.

"This might not appeal to everyone, and we definitely respect parents who choose to keep their name and the baby naming process more private," Moler told SheKnows.com. "However, we are allowing baby naming to become more social, and a lot of parents love being able to include their friends and family in the process."

Hill?who had previously considered names including Katorah and Winter?told NBC Los Angeles she won't be monitoring the online vote.

?I?m afraid if I look at them I?ll get my favorite one,? Hill said. ?And then I?ll be disappointed.?

Satechi Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader

  • Pros

Speedy USB 3.0 connection. Doesn?t require an external power supply.

  • Cons USB connection only.
  • Bottom Line

The Satechi Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is a versatile, nicely designed USB 3.0-compatible solution for users who need to access data stored across multiple card formats.

By Ahmer Kazi The Satechi Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader ($29.99 direct) is an attractively designed, portable solution for users without a built-in card reader in their system, or have one that can't read different card formats. . It serves up a convenient, USB 3.0-compatible way to access and transfer data stored in SD, XD, MS, TF, M2, and CF formats.

Measuring 0.6 by 4.1 by 2.5 inches (HWD) and weighing a scant 4 ounces, the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is tiny enough to slip into your pants pocket or backpack without adding any noticeable bulk. With the exception of the plastic front and rear panels, the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is constructed entirely out of sleek brushed aluminum. Consequently, its chassis earns points for style while also providing a degree of sturdiness that would otherwise be absent in, say, an all-plastic design.

The top of the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is simple and unadorned, save for an LED power indicator that emits a bright blue light when the unit is connected to your system. Four included adhesive feet can be affixed to the bottom of the unit to provide a grip for smooth surfaces. The front panel of the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader houses slots for MS, TF, M2, and SD card formats. The rear panel, meanwhile, sports XD and CF card slots.

There's a USB 3.0 port for connecting the reader to your system. It's backwards-compatible, so the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader can also be connected via USB 2.0. Moreover, since the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is bus-powered, no external power supply is required. As its name implies, though, the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader only supports a USB connection; users with a preference for eSATA or FireWire need to look elsewhere.

The Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is compatible with Windows (2000/XP/Vista/7/8) and Mac (OS 10.2 or higher). In both operating systems, setting it up is a straightforward process that requires little beyond simply plugging it into your system's USB port. Since it's a plug-and-play device, I found it equally easy to use in both Windows and Mac, and functioned identically in both operating systems, albeit with one wrinkle: In Windows, the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader appears as five removable disks, with each one representing the five slots. In the Mac interface, conversely, only slots with inserted cards appear as a removable drive. More importantly, the card slots are judiciously arranged between the two panels in a way that prevents overcrowding when the Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is fully loaded. That, along with a generously-sized 24-inch USB cable, make for a hassle-free user experience.

Whether you've got data stored across multiple SD, XD, MS, TF, M2, CF cards and don't have a system with an integrated card reader or if you prefer to access multiple cards at once, the Satechi Multifunction USB 3.0 Card Reader is an great option. Overall, it's a portable and convenient way to access and transfer data stored in multiple card formats. While it would have stood to benefit from giving users the option of connecting via eSATA or FireWire, it's nonetheless worth checking out.

Take a stab at butchery skill class tourism

Nothing says vacation like getting elbow deep in a bloody pig carcass. At least not for the growing number of travelers looking to add butchery to the repertoire of culinary skills they've picked up around the country (or globe). While cooking classes and farm tours are long-time staples of foodie vacation activities, butchery workshops are picking up steam. The visceral, hands-on, seriously know-where-your-meat-comes-from aspect isn't for everyone. But the thought of donning chainmail and wielding a knife appeals to enough people that classes with master butchers are popping up from coast to coast.

Avedano's in San Francisco says they've seen the number of students in their classes grow by 25% a year for the last five years. Farmstead Meatsmith in the South Puget Sound of Washington only offered one type of class two-and-a-half years ago and now offers four today. In 2011, Bolzano Meats in Milwaukee offered four classes; last year they more than doubled that to 10. Classes sell out five months ahead of time with students traveling from as far away as Missouri.

Fleisher's Grass-Fed and Organic Meats in New York has had to triple the number of classes they offer in the last year. They offer one and three day classes for beginners in Hudson Valley. The hands-on sessions include a slaughter.

?It's a pretty bonding experience. It's very emotional,? says Jessica Applestone, who owns Fleisher's with her husband Joshua. ?People are really struck by the slaughter. You made that choice to participate in how your food arrived on your plate. You'll never really look at meat the same way."

Christine Huang, who works in marketing in New York City, and traveled to Hudson Valley for the three-day class, agrees. ?It does give you a new-found respect for the meat you put on your table,? she says. ?There was that moment when you know the pig is dead and it turns from being a pig into being pork."

What draws home cooks to tackle this new level of cooking class? ?I think people are concerned about mystery meat and factory farming and pink slime,? says Marissa Guggiana, co-founder of The Butcher's Guild and author of Primal Cuts. ?They want to be more connected.?

Angela Wilson, another founder of The Butchers Guild, and one of the three female owners of Avedano's (which also offers classes) in San Francisco, adds that part of the allure of butchery is its DIY-appeal. ?People are canning, meat-cutting, candle-making. People in a bad economy have less money and want to get back to basics," she said. "They want to know where their meat comes from.?

And people are willing to travel for the experience, Wilson says, rattling off names of other destination butchers who offer classes, like 4505 Meats in San Francisco, Portland Meat Collective, and Farmstead Meatsmith in Washington.

Though much of the action takes place on the coasts ? the Bay area, Portland, and Brooklyn are the epicenters, according to Guggiana ? the trend can be spotted nationwide. She cited Austin as a food hub, and noted Jesse Griffith's classes there on hunting and butchering wild game. Meanwhile, in Denver, a man named Mark DeNittis has started an organization called The Rocky Mountain Institute of Meat.

The Butcher & Larder in Chicago offers demonstrations; all things heritage pig will be celebrated at Slo Pig in Milwaukee in April; and though "all this meat stuff is still kind of a guy's thing," according to Wilson, there's even an April workshop in Napoleon, Kentucky, called Grrls Meat Camp, teaching butchery skills to women.

Many students come away not only transformed, but equipped to tackle new projects. Huang plans to make bacon. John Long, who traveled from Doylestown, Pennsylvania, for the Fleisher's class, says he is going process a pig with a friend in his garage. Some take it a step further, making plans to permanently swap pinstripes for chainmail.

?We get tons of people from Wall Street,? says Fleisher's Emily Bonilla. "We're working with two money men who want to become meat men."
