Tyron Woodley, Bobby Green stand out in UFC 156 prelims

Strikeforce fighters kicked off the night by going 3-0, with Tyron Woodley and Bobby Green making a big statement on Saturday.

As one of the Strikeforce refugees, Woodley was hoping to stand out. Mission accomplished. He destroyed Jay Hieron with a 36-second knockout. Woodley knocked him down with a right, then followed him to the ground to finish the fight. It was Woodley's first fight since losing to Nate Marquardt in Strikeforce in July.

Bobby Green had to overcome Jacob Volkmann's wrestling and some questionable refereeing for a win. Volkmann, an All-American wrestler at Minnesota, rode Green out for the first round. In the second round, Green was on top and working ground and pound when referee Kim Winslow inexplicably stood the fighters up. But Green took over in the third with ground and pound that finally ended with a rear-naked choke. The bout was stopped at 4:25.

Two of the prelim bouts came down to tight decisions. First, Isaac Vallie-Flagg took a stand-up filled split decision over Yves Edwards. It was Vallie-Flagg's UFC debut after fighting for Strikeforce, and he won it 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.

In the final fight of the preliminary bouts, the UFC cut it close as Evan Dunham and Gleison Tibau's three-round fight ended with seconds before the broadcast ended. Dunham won the split decision 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 as he continued to pressure Tibau late in the bout.

In the Facebook preliminaries, Francisco Rivera aggressively came on in the second with big, big strikes. He finished off Edwin Figueroa at 4:20. Chico Camus took Dustin Kimura, a much better grappler, down and then lost by rear naked choke in the third round.

Mexico blast kills at least 33, flagging Pemex safety woes

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Rescue workers pulled out more bodies from debris at the headquarters of Mexican state oil giant Pemex on Friday after a powerful explosion killed at least 33 people and threw a spotlight onto the state-run company's poor safety record.

Scenes of confusion and chaos outside the downtown tower block in Mexico City have dealt another blow to Pemex's image, just as Mexico's new president is seeking to court outside investment for the 75-year-old monopoly.

Thursday's blast occurred at a Pemex building next to the 50-story skyscraper, and senior officials said 33 people had so far been confirmed dead. A further 121 were injured, said the company's chief executive, Emilio Lozoya.

Officials have been unable to say how many people may still be trapped in the wreckage of the office block, which remains cordoned off. A military paramedic at the scene said there were likely many and expected the death toll to keep rising.

Lozoya said it was not clear what caused the midafternoon explosion, which has been the subject of speculation ranging from a bomb attack, to a gas leak, to a boiler blowing up.

"A fatal incident like yesterday's cannot be explained in two hours, we are working with the best teams in Mexico and from overseas, we will not speculate," he told a news conference.

Pemex, both a symbol of Mexican self-sufficiency and a byword for security glitches, oil theft and frequent accidents, has been hamstrung by inefficiency, union corruption and a series of safety failures costing hundreds of lives.

The latest Pemex disaster is also one of the first serious tests for President Enrique Pena Nieto, who took office in December saying overhauling the company was a top priority.

Investors have been closely following how far he will go in enticing private capital to boost flagging oil output in a country that is the world's number seven producer.

"This incident speaks very poorly of the image of Pemex management, and that's interpreted as additional risk in the market," said Miriam Grunstein, an energy researcher at Mexico's CIDE think tank.

COLLAPSE

A Pemex official said the damaged area was used for human resources in the corporate and refining divisions. It did not have a boiler or gas installations, the official said.

Former Pemex worker Ricardo Marin, 53, said there was nothing in the building which would explode and that the kitchen, where there would be gas, was on the other side.

"The only thing that occurs to me is that it was an attack - but against whom? There's no one with an important job down there," he said, waiting outside the Pemex hospital where a friend was in intensive care. "Maybe it could be a message to Pena Nieto, but not even that has any logic."

Pemex office worker Alfonso Caballero, who was one floor above the blast at the time, said he did not smell any gas and guessed it had been caused by machinery.

Mexican officials have not ruled out sabotage.

An official at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said an "international response team" was on its way to Mexico City at the request of the Mexican government. The team includes explosive specialists and fire experts.

Pemex CEO Lozoya said the four floors worst affected by the explosion normally had about 200 to 250 people working on them. That compared with about 10,000 staff in the entire complex.

Red Cross official Isaac Oxenhaut said the ceiling had collapsed in three lower floors of the Pemex building.

The blast followed a September fire at a Pemex gas facility near the northern city of Reynosa that killed 30 people. More than 300 were killed when a Pemex natural gas plant on the outskirts of Mexico City blew up in 1984.

Eight years later, about 200 people were killed and 1,500 injured after a series of underground gas explosions in Guadalajara, Mexico's second-biggest city. An official investigation found Pemex was partly to blame.

'NO PRIVATIZATION'

Whatever caused the explosion, the deaths and destruction will put the spotlight back on safety at Pemex, which only a couple of hours beforehand had issued a statement on Twitter saying it had managed to improve its record on accidents.

"I suspect this was a bomb," said David Shields, an independent Mexico City-based oil analyst. "There are clandestine armies across Mexico, not just the (drug) cartels."

Shields pointed to the bombing of several Pemex pipelines in the eastern state of Veracruz in 2007. A shadowy Marxist rebel movement took credit for some of the blasts.

Meanwhile, George Baker, director of Energia.com, a Houston-based energy research center, said past history suggested the government could seek to exploit the incident.

He pointed to the 1992 Guadalajara blast and the subsequent deal that followed to overhaul the Pemex administration led by then-President Carlos Salinas, like Pena Nieto a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI.

"Salinas said he wanted a response from Pemex, and months later Pemex announced a restructuring. The restructuring had nothing to do with the Guadalajara accident, but it was used as a pivot to do something," Baker said.

Pena Nieto has yet to reveal details of his Pemex reform plan, which already faces opposition from the left.

Both Pena Nieto and his finance minister were this week at pains to stress the company will not be privatized.

Hold On [closed]

Rohaan saw black infringing on the corners of his vision a little as he tripped over himself again. He needed to eat something, but he didn't trust the food here. He would need to hunt, but even that would prove to be difficult as his usual methods were of no use to him at the moment and the only weapons he carried were knives. He found that people on the road, when he did meet them, were cocky and less afraid of a man with no sword, axe, bow, or even a gun. They would drop their guard, assuming he would be an easy target for theft or attack. Truth be told, they never had any idea what they were up against.

In the split second in which he lost his footing, Rohaan foresaw the next few moments in growing dread: he would meet the warm bricks of the market square, his body would feel heavier than ever as he scrambled to right himself, and his pursuers would find him, overpower him, and force him back into the drugged stupor that had held him captive. Falling in what felt like slow motion, he saw it all and drew in a breath to groan at his misfortune when a pair of arms shot out from the masses to curl around his chest like ropes, suspending him from his inevitable fall just long enough for him to regain his footing.

At first, Rohaan wheeled back, ready to strike the assailant and slip away, but as he stood upright, he saw that this patron was no assailant. She was just a woman, an ordinary citizen of this twisted province. Her placid eyes looked to him with mild concern; for a moment, Rohaan stared back through tangled tendrils of shoulder-length curls the color of freshly hewn straw. It became immediately obvious that this man was not only a foreigner to this province, but he wasn't human either. His eyes were a wild blue, almost too dark and bright to be real and the spirited fire behind them was strong--something that in this province was not seen. Through his unkempt hair, a small braid that hung in front of his left ear could be seen; from the leather that bound its end dangled a small but hefty bronze coin--both appeared to have been there for a very long time.

"Are you alright?"
His answer came quickly. "A'ta, a'ta...ijai kelah....." It took him a second to realize the language he was speaking was that of his homeland, not the common tongue spoken throughout the mainland provinces. After some quick deliberation, he more clearly said, "I'm fine." Now standing an arm's length from her, he swiftly examined her features to find that they--most notably, her eyes--looked...dull. Not that she seemed to be a dull person, per se, but she had the look of someone who had lost all hope, who had given up on the pursuit of life, of love, of dreams and aspirations. She looked like every other person in this awful province. Rohaan's heart wept for her and her people's misfortune. To think that they either never had or would never remember true freedom or passion clawed at a deeply rooted fear in his soul. What's more, she bore the pin of a dignitary--from what he remembered, all dignitaries and their families wore them so that all who saw them could offer proper respect. She must have been the daughter of one of the nobles. What a pity that those sick dictators would poison their own children...

There had been enough quiet murmuring around them to draw the attention of one of the soldiers nearby; he gave a sharp whistle to beckon his two friends and they quickly began to close in. Two drew their swords, the other had an arrow nocked and ready.
"Don't you move, Ja'aisen! You're surrounded!"
"Look at him! He's pathetic! I hardly believe THIS is the thief of legend, the phantom in the night! Go on, Phantom! Disappear before my very eyes, amaze me." The soldier laughed.
"You laugh," Rohaan said, a wild, defiant grin creeping onto his lips. "But don't forget who managed to slip past your guard in the first place. You really ought to rethink your dungeons if you intend to lock up those of us whom you mean to oppress..."
Insulted, the soldier's smile faded and he lifted his bow, drawing the arrow back slowly.
With a strength that betrayed his wretched appearance, Rohaan's deft arms snapped outward, gripping the girl by first the shoulder of her dress and then by her long braid to bring her directly in front of his body. "Aa-a-aah, careful now, soldier. Don't want to miss your mark, do you?"
The soldier's composure flickered, but he held fast. "Wanna try my aim, Ja'aisen?"
"Up to you. But If I see that bowstring stretched any tighter...." he trailed off, smelling the girl's hair. "Mm. Exceptionally clean...she must come from a very wealthy family to have such nice soap. It's a nice pin she's got there, too..."
"You don't have it in you to kill an innocent girl!" His composure officially broke and he gave a sharp glare to the two swordsmen to keep them in place. Rohaan had him. "You're a gutless rat!"
Rohaan grinned wickedly and showed the knife that he drew from inside his leather jacket. "Wanna try my aim, solider? I Don't think you do. I tell y'what. This nice lass and I are gonna go for a stroll out the east gate. You're going to fetch me a strong horse with a saddle and bring it to the gate, then we're going to take a ride. If no one follows us, I'll let her go unharmed. If I hear the crunch of a boot or the whinny of a horse behind me, you'll have to explain to...someone rather powerful how his daughter was killed for your stupidity."

For a moment, none of the soldiers moved. The four of them were caught in a staredown to try and read how serious the other was about making good on his threats until Rohaan tested them by taking a careful step back, guiding the girl to follow by giving a firm but not yet harsh tug on her braid. "Keep quiet now," he whispered to her. "The more you cooperate, the less it'll hurt for you."

The soldiers were still frozen in place, even as Rohaan and the girl backed away slowly.
"What do we do?" one asked the archer in panic. "That's--"
"I know who that is....go fetch him a horse and saddle," he said in defeat.
"You can't be serious....you actually want me to bring him one of our horses? Those are thuroughbreds! For all we know, he'll kill it and the girl as soon as he's free of the walls!"
"Give him Jixo. That nightmare of a stallion will give him all kinds of trouble. Then we wait till nightfall to go after them. Now go!"

NPD: Apple tops Q4 US smartphone sales, Samsung a strong second place

Nothing super-shocking in this latest report from NPD -- not after seeing fairly similar numbers from Strategy Analytics not all that long ago, that is. According to the research group, Apple's leading the pack at 39-percent of US smartphone sales in the final quarter of last year -- that number's down from 41-percent this time last year. Bigger changes are afoot over at Samsung, however. The handset maker jumped from 21- to 30-percent from the same time last year, thanks in no small part to demand for the Galaxy S III. Go figure, NPD's top five list is dominated entirely by iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S iterations -- in fact, combined, the two manufacturers make up some 70-percent of sales. Motorola is in at a distant third, with seven-percent of sales, followed by HTC and LG, each at six-percent.
